Birth of a moth

The transformation process from caterpillar to moth.

The female Common Splendid Ghost Moth (Aenetus ligniveren) caterpillar has excavated a hole in the stem of this Acacia where it lives, covering itself with a bag of silk and sawdust. It comes out at night to feed on bark, still inside the bag. Eventually it pupates in the hole, before emerging as a beautiful moth.
